Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are you associated with Carnival Corporation or any Carnival Corporation cruise line brands?"
A. No. Carnival is in the cruise and port business - not the shore excursion business. Amber Cove Adventures is a family-owned and operated shore excursion operator at the Caribbean's newest destination, Amber Cove, located outside the Amber Cove Cruise Center. Although Carnival Corporation is not a shore excursion operator - they do sell tickets for their sponsored operators inside the cruise port, on their website and onboard their ships. As Carnival Corporation press releases state, "Amber Cove is the Caribbean's newest destination". Also, the north coast of the Dominican Republic has been widely known for many, many years as the "Amber Coast". Since our guests will be searching for excursion alternatives to the ship sponsored tours - it made good sense to call ourselves Amber Cove Adventures. We are on the Amber Coast. The destination is Amber Cove. AND WE LOVE ADVENTURE!!
Q. Is Amber Cove an Island?
A. No. Amber Cove is a cruise port built by Carnival Corporation. The Amber Cove Cruise Center is located in the town of Maimon (in the municipality of Puerto Plata) which is about 15-minutes from Puerto Plata's historic district.
Q. Is Puerto Plata “safe”?
A. YES! Ask yourself, "would my cruise line take me to an unsafe destination?" Puerto Plata is a mature, tourist destination. Simply exercise reasonable care (leave the valuables in your cabin, don’t carry large amounts cash and stay with your professional shore excursion operator and your group – the usual sound advice for travelers).
Q. Where do we meet you?
A. Our Welcome Team is located just outside the main gates of the Amber Cove Cruise Center, on the sidewalk, next to the highway. You will walk along the pier, through Duty-Free, go past the tour buses, go past the taxis, go past the tour booths trying for last minute sales, continue down the long sidewalk,go past the main gate security (small hut on the right) and exit the large, white, main gates. Completely leave the cruise center. Look towards the left. There is a sidewalk about 50 yards away. We will be on that sidewalk, holding signs that read, "Amber Cove Adventures". Since you are booking outside the cruise lines, please do not expect the staff inside the cruise center to be helpful. However, we will be on the sidewalk waiting for you. The walk to our meet location is approximately 12-minutes at a normal pace.
Q. Are your tours suitable for those with limited mobility?
A. No. The reason we cannot offer limited mobility excursions is due to the fact that the Amber Cove Cruise Center does not permit pick-up or drop-off inside the cruise center unless you purchase a tour through the cruise line. We understand this - the Amber Cove Cruise Center is on private property. However, you do have the option to take a taxi from inside the cruise center to our meet location. The posted taxi rates are for 1-5 passengers. If you use the taxi option to reach us, there are many "sit-out" points on our sightseeing and beach excursions. We can accommodate a limited number of folding walkers, collapsible wheelchairs and cane users. We do need to know at least 1, full week from your sail date in order to plan the proper transportation. Please kindly note: If your mobility is limited, you will be required to sit-out portions of the excursions (in nice, safe areas with lovely views) so that your tour companions can complete the walking portions of the excursion in the time allocated.
Q. What is the difference between a tour operator and a shore excursion operator?
A. A professional shore excursion operator works with cruise passengers exclusively. In our case, we have over 20-years of experience working with cruise passengers in many cruise destinations around the world including shore excursion operations in the Dominican Republic since 2008. Our owners actually live and work in the destinations taking on many roles including guiding our tours! We never “broker” tours – meaning we do not offer another operator’s tour and simply add a mark-up. Our tours are our tours and we take pride in the way we develop our experiences and train our staff.
Q. What is the advantage of booking directly with a shore excursion operator?
A. We cannot speak for all shore excursion operators but we strive to provide personal service before, during and even after your time in port. We also pack our experiences with value. Since we do not have the concern of high cruise line mark-ups, we can offer our tours with lots of cool extras for a price that is beneficial to us and to our guests…AND…we really, truly enjoy the interaction with our guests.
